The Manual for Smart Streets aims to help stakeholders capitalise on the effective use of data and emerging technology for Streets and Highways.

The current version of this manual was developed by Connected Places Catapult as a 12 month project commissioned and supported by the Department for Transport.

The Transport Technology Forum (TTF) played a key role in supporting the development of this manual and providing the website platform it is published on. The Manual for Smart streets is published online as working content that continues to evolve with emerging practice and technology. It is intended to continue engagement with the TTF and wider practitioner community to further develop the content of this manual and best practices for smart streets.

The Manual for Smart Streets project, and by extension this manual, is intended to be a thought-piece providing ideas, knowledge, and suggestive guidance. The manual does not intend to be exhaustive, present authoritative recommendations, or final solutions. Where assumptions have been made, for the purpose of project delivery, these have been set without prejudice to alternatives.

This manual does not necessarily represent the views of the Department for Transport or any UK government body.

“I started with an outcome of what do we want the places we live to be like, what do we want that to be for our families and our kids, and then what do we need to get people there – and easy is the is the first word. It’s got to be easy.”

The words of Chris Boardman MBE, Interim Commissioner at Active Travel England and the main voice on this week’s Highways Voices podcast, in conversation at last week’s Transport Technology Forum conference in Liverpool, with Anthony Ferguson of the Department for Transport.

In the fascinating chat, Mr Boardman talks about getting people out of their cars safely, and making it easy for people to walk and cycle.

“Amsterdam’s 408 miles from where we’re sitting now – same climate,” he says. “60% of kids get to school under their own steam, largely largely riding bikes… and they do that every day. And that’s just normal 408 miles from here. That’s just normal. And we asked the question, wouldn’t you want that for your kids?”

Hear how Mr Boardman plans to make it happen for kids, and adults across the country.

You’ll also hear news from our partners including an expanded ITS (UK) Awards, and why that’s the winner of Adrian’s Accolade this week, plus there’s news from the Highways News website.

Note – in Mr Boardman’s chat, he uses the word sh*t. Please don’t listen if you or someone nearby may be offended by that.

The Transport Technology Forum is to partner with Highways News to work together to knowledge share through the Highways Voices podcast.

The TTF will be working with fellow transport-related organisations ITS (UK), the Local Council Roads Innovation Group and the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport.

Highways Voices launched a year ago as a series of weekly 20-30 minute on-demand radio-style magazine programmes which feature leading opinion formers in the highways and transport technology industries.

The new partnership sees Highways Voices bring news and features about ITS (UK), the TTF, LCRIG and ADEPT as part of the programme, and these four organisations will assist by offering guests and by sharing details of the podcasts with their members and contacts.

“I see this as a win-win for us and our partners,” said podcast presenter and producer Paul Hutton. “We have grown a loyal audience of listeners to Highways Voices over the past year and we can therefore share news of our partners’ important work each week, and bring their opinion formers to our audience. Their extra reach also means more people will hear of Highways Voices, and that will increase who listens to it.”

“We don’t have the time or resources to manage and produce our own podcast, so this solution is perfect for us,” commented Darren Capes of the DfT who manages the TTF. “I have been a guest on Highways Voices myself and had positive feedback afterwards, so am delighted to partner the TTF with the podcast.” “With Paul’s knowledge of ITS and his broadcasting background, there aren’t many better at producing transport-related podcasts,” added ITS (UK) Secretary General Jennie Martin. “We’re impressed with how many of our members have already featured on Highways Voices and spread the word about our industry, and look forward to expanding this relationship in the future.”

“LCRIG plays an important role in making the case for local roads and we look forward to working with the team at Highways News to help spread the word about the good work taking place across the sector,” said LCRIG CEO Martin Duffy. “It is important that we represent the views of our members and ensure that their voices are heard. We will be putting a focus on highlighting the value of local roads and continue to work hard to make change happen. Through both our own initiatives, and by highlighting the work of others, we look forward to showcasing this on the excellent Highways Voices podcast.”

Chair of ADEPT’s Transport and Connectivity Board, Mark Kemp concluded, “ADEPT has so much going on and not a lot of time to shout about it, so we want in too. We’re looking forward to being part of such a great podcast and focusing on all things transport. To be able to talk about highways in depth without being rushed on by my fellow place directors will be fantastic!”

Highways Voices is published every Wednesday at 9.30 on the Highways News website, with extra editions delivered from major events such as Highways UK and the ITS World Congress.

The post TTF partners with Highways Voices podcast first appeared on TTF.

The post TTF partners with Highways Voices podcast appeared first on TTF.

Since the imposition of travel restrictions designed to help dramatically reduce the spread of Covid-19, the Transport Technology Forum has led the collation of transport data from local authorities into information used to understand changes in travel behaviour.

Authorities from cities, towns and counties across England are sharing urban traffic control and automated traffic counter data from the roadside, as well as information on cycling and car parks. Industry has also supplied video analytics and floating vehicle data patterns. This sits alongside data the Department receives about rail and air, public transport, freight and maritime to summarise how, where and when people and goods are moving around the country.

Weekly Digests for 2022

The Transport Technology Forum is publishing this data set as a weekly digest for interested parties, not least those bodies who went above and beyond the call to share their data with us. The list below is the full archive of weekly digests going back to the start of the project.

These weekly digests have been prepared by the Transport Technology Forum as part of its remit to drive more effective and efficient management of existing and new road networks, as a key national opportunity before, during and after the current Covid-19 emergency. Road transport will remain a key pillar of how people and goods move across the nation, not just on strategic roads. Improving road travel through technology is a core aim of the Forum. The Forum promotes a collaborative culture to open up the opportunity and address the caution which has historically impeded efficiency and innovation.

These digests also provide examples of best practice shared by local authorities including highlighting an initiative to allow the public to report places where they think changes to road layout are needed to support safe, sustainable travel, changes to bike hire schemes to encourage, or react to, increased take-up, road layout improvements and the underwriting of schemes to enable quicker introduction.

Each week the Transport Technology Forum publishes a summary of data gathered from a range of local authorities across the country, providing an overview of how public behaviour is changing as a result of Coronavirus restrictions being eased.

This post lists the digests for 2022 and will be updated as new digests are produced.

Digest data for 2020 can be found here and 2021 data here.
